Building and Testing Materials
We are currently working on building towers and bridges in our science class. The students are challenged to build a solid structure that fits the requirements of the project.
For the tower... "The observation tower overlooking the coulees in Lethbridge has sustained great water damage, and is in need of a rebuild. Your challenge is to develop a model tower that could be built in the coulees of Lethbridge. This tower should be able to endure flooding as well as the weather in Southern Alberta." Here is a list of the requirements for a tower; -1 meter or taller -Can hold 500g of weight at the top -Can withstand a strong wind (Fan on high, 2m away) -Built in a safe manner -Using materials appropriate to the project. |
Should students find the tower project interesting but want to go above and beyond, a castle with multiple towers can become an option.
The requirements will be similar for the castle, however each tower must hold a 500g weight. The structure must also not move during the heavy winds.

Should the tower or castle not fit your child, the option to build a bridge is available.

-Must be 1 meter in distance
-Must hold a 500g weight in the center of the bridge
-Must hold up to a heavy wind (a fan, 2 meters away, on high)
-Must be build in a safe manner
-Built using materials appropriate to the project.
